In search of life @Seoul

Seoul looks so afresh since my last visit 5 years ago.

The Korean capital is renowned for its fashion icons and local food. Yet it ‘s far beyond this. Let me share with you a recent trip – which I have inspired my friends to discover the artistic side of Seoul.

The Korean government is very visionary. She has invested tremendously in the K-pop culture while the development of arts and architecture are not neglected. Seoul has become an international icon. Many iconic architecture landmarks are built, such as DDP by the late architect Zaha Hadid which balances perfectly with scale and multi-functions. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) also houses a collection of Korean contemporary artists and international renowned pieces in a space of aesthetics matching the East oriental with modern touch. You can find equally stunning arts in the Seoul Art Center where you are inspired by the creativity of a group of emerging artists.

For fashion geeks, never miss the Apgujeong-dong and Sinsa where you can explore all the top-tier international fashion brands and their brand exhibitions. Or check in at one of the brand’s cafés. You will be amazed by the fabulous marketing strategy – and enhance your brand loyalty like me after a visit to the flagship stores of Dior and Hermes!

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Changdeokgung and the traditional Korean architecture village bukchon are not to be missed for learning the traditional culture of the developed economy. They are well preserved with the original historic touch. Can you imagine how relaxing it could be – to make a visit the attractions, and stroll into a neighborhood of interesting shops, modern art galleries and cafés?!

DDP is situated in the heart of the Dongdaemun as if a spacious metallic spaceship landed to this modern city. The different zones have housed different exhibitions and thematic shops for architecture, entertainment, kids and young artists. The lovely touch – there is an outdoor lawn which is an enjoyable outdoor gathering and relaxing place.

The spacious and peaceful indoor: Highlight with the unlimited collection of deco I’d love to have!

The hip place has provided a variety of fashion icons for shopping. From local to international designers. Available with restaurants and food stalls too.

Such a fabulous all-year-round ocean of flowers!

The best demonstration of harmony in aesthetics – integrating the architecture and nature with the surrounding perfectly.

Sharing Life Stories with the International Leading Designer Fiona Kutor

Wasn’t it a destiny to carry my Tory Burch handbag with me when I showed Fiona Kutor around in an artistic restaurant? The special venue has showcased art pieces of many internationally well-known artists such as Takashi Marakami, Yayoi Kusama, MR., Yoshitoma Nara, Hajime Sorayama and an array of colourful street art collection from Brazil. Along the way, I am delighted to know we are sharing the same background – majoring in Fine Arts! She commented the interior design in her sharp artistic sense – colourful but not too messy with the combination. It’s not easy to use so many colours. It’s very “eclectic” – we spoke out the same word together!

Fiona Kutor has her own interesting background. She majored in Fine Arts, and started her career in Ralph Lauren and Gap. She helped her friend to set up her own brand “Tory Burch” later on. Thought she did not major in design, she founded her own brand “Kutor” which specializes in clutch bags too. Her clients include Jennifer Lopez, Kate Bosworth, Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Jessica Alba, Carmen Electra, Emma Roberts… and many more leading models worldwide. Her clutch bags have become an icon for many celebrity artists on red carpets.

(Success only comes from failure!)

We sat down to hear more ups and downs from Fiona – in her fair manner and  humility.

“I am inspired by my mother. The “Goddess of Inspiration” is very talented, she has mastered illustration, drawing to interior design. I also think my Fine Arts background fostered my creativity too.”

“The inspiration comes from anywhere, from an art piece, a person, or the nature!”
“Success only comes from failure!” The celebrity designer has humbly shared her own brand story.

“I have encountered countless failure. Like when I founded Kutor, I suffered from considerable amount of loss in making samplings in a Shenzhen factory. I started everything from sketch again, and of course learnt a lesson. Till now, I visit my factory from time to time and supervise the quality.” With the technological breakthrough, everything can advance if you want. “I am planning to do sampling with the 3D printing technology. More cost effective. I will also get the patens for my own 3D printed bags!”

Relocating from New York to Hong Kong with a family of 4 sons, how does this women entrepreneur keep her own balance?

“Being focused and the art of prioritization. Things turn bad sometimes, and sometimes it’s beyond your control over time. Always with Plan B.”

“Well, I never plan for a family of 4 kids, but who knows I ‘d have a twins?” She shared with me a photo of the 4 lovely sons in Halloween costume.

As sparkling as she can be, Fiona Kutor is a woman icon of fashion and elegance.

Taichung – A stay in Old England Manor with Mom

It’s a very special holiday. It is a break for work, an opportunity to widen my horizons, as well as an occasion to take Mom to Taiwan for the first time. I wanted to give her a surprise in the accommodations – thank her for taking care of a willful and curious daughter for so long.

The Old England Manor was built in Turdo architecture style on top of the hills in 1700m of Cingjing. Elegant and grand. Charming and mystery as well with the on and off mists and sunshine. It was built with NT$200 million for 9 years.  All building materials, wood sculpture and furniture were imported from Europe. The castle is in divided in 3 zones, a total of 23 rooms. Each room is equipped with top-tier AV brand Focal Utopia and Hermes or BVGARI shower supplies. Guests will receive a daily room surprise, and are invited for dinner with the Host and enjoy a Focal Utopia concert in the Shakespeare Conference Room. It is a fabulous opportunity for guests to chill out with some drinks and bites together. There are many  artwork replica in the castle. One to note about the castle – high privacy level – visitors are restricted to enjoy the renowned afternoon tea in the restaurant and take a walk in the outdoor garden only. Recommend taking more outfits with you – Cingjing ‘s temperature contrast up to up to 10 degrees between day and night. I missed the stay so much – for the considerate and sociable hotel guests who had taken a very good care of my mom!

Surprised to locate a collection of Japanese style of buildings here and there in Taichung. Recommend one of them – Lin, Chih-Chu Memorial Building, a former residence of Professor Lin. Simple and elegant.

The painting pigment was well preserved for exhibition. Long forgone pigment mixed with minerals.

Prof. Lin was influenced by the Japanese culture a lot, as seen from the Japanese dining room.

Some artwork of Prof. Lin. Delicate brushwork. Influenced by the Japanese woodcuts, you can see the Japanese touch and flat in his presentation. Sparkling   with the special mineral touch too.

In love with the flowers and birds of Prof. Lin’s artwork which you can share the peace and harmony from his end.

Morphing Butterflies (From Gold to White)

Butterfly is representation of transformation and self-revelation. Each of them strives to shine through darkness, win through struggling, finding balance and fulfilment through self-creation. The ultimate redemption of life is to return to the purest form of being.

Etiquette

The Interesting Stereotype of Etiquette Vs Posture

Q&A:

Isn’t a cliché photo? Chosen on purpose.

Seldom do I talk about my study of the etiquette and the two relevant certificates I got in the U.K., which has usually ended up in stressing my friends out during social gatherings alternatively. Not until was I invited to participate in a youth training on etiquette, I was convinced I could actually help contribute to the community by training peers of university students and society elite.

Being “Presentable” is a jargon in marketing.  When a contemporary society  is getting more sophisticated, there is a higher demand in lifestyle, taste, culture nurture, social networking and corporate management.  How to make first and lasting positive image, receive and entertain clients with the utmost of professionalism, savoir-vivre and precision?

Understanding and learning the art of etiquette is a way to build and foster your self-esteem, self-confidence, social respect as well as interpersonal relationships. In short, this is the “soft skills” which we always talk about: from dressing, behaviour, communications skills, table manner, intercultural awareness, afternoon tea etiquette, international social manner to business etiquette etc.

To ME, etiquette actually means the basic respect and self-respect for others and in a culture aspect.

Q&A:

  1. Many friends asked me if I went to the UK all the way to learn “posture”?

Yes strictly speaking. Posture is how you act with your body in every single move. Like how you can also pick it up from dancing. Posture is indeed an essential lesson for the art of etiquette. (yes part of it)

  1. Is learning the art of etiquette restricted to ladies only?

No. We do have different requirements for men and women, regardless social networking or business etiquette.

  1. Friends like to follow what I do while we gather and dine. During dining at a Vietnamese restaurant, is that true that gentlemen need to take food to ladies’ plate?

I believe I didn’t pay my tuition fee to learn that in the U.K. However, I guess our parents teach us some basic unlearnt virtue at home. For example, we cannot cross the other end with our chopsticks; never flip the bottom of the plate for serving; be quiet when you chew… all these basic table manners apply across the mainstream etiquette.

  1. Who should settle the bill when dining?

It depends on the situation in different occasions, for example, social or business settings.

  1. Have you planned to learn etiquette for sake of becoming a tai-tai? Well…
Career

福兮

Bad or Good?

西方人有一句諺語:“The only constant in life is change.”

There is an idiom from the West: “The only constant in life is change.”

2016 is a Year of Change for me.  Undergone ups and downs in my career are norm. Some people may admire the bright side of my career path, but they would never know how hard I was working at the office till the midnight in my tears, and pretended nothing had happened the next day. I was ambtious to make a change in multi-national organisations. Yet, one may never get equal apprecation in and out of the workplace – even someone out there was amazed by the turn-around of the corporate branding as a result. I had forgone excessive time (overwork during weekends) and mental stress to make something happened. However, one day, I just decided to let it go. During a few months of break, I was totally disappointed with the world, and all the bad memories just kept wandering in my brain. It was until a point where I realised I lost the balance, and maybe too much idle time. I started my reflection in life – what do I want to do? Can I still make a shift from the industry that I didn’t really like? Why did I just focus on work? What is the meaning of success in life? Was it defined by work achievements? Then I made a few refreshing trips, listened to the valuable peer advice, and picked up some hobbies and drawing again, and even started a blog!

Can I leave a blank canvas  in my life for a few months? Was that true?

The life went on. I moved to a new house, got some changes and more changes followed. One day, I got a call, which successfully made a career shift – yes, the dream job associated with arts, high-end brands and lifestyle! While I am writing a review of this year (or a new beginning), and I just realized I won 3 marketing and prestigious PR awards at work this year. What a credit for the past!

Just keep going, make a turn sometimes. Embrace the changes, and you’d never know what is in stored for you!. Right there waiting for you.

Let the Taiwanese wisdom soothes your soul

I’ve put on my souful smile from my heart whenever I come back to Taipei. The city is not famous for its power. Rather it is a city of diversity, human touch and culture where you can feel it in every corner, or with whoever you meet. Taipei people love their city. You can see the balance of tradition and growth here. There is a reason why many Hongkongers feel very connected with the city.
